The moment captured of the Prom Kings Spencer Mallot (left) and Uriah Williams (right) being crowned on April 6, 2024. Mallot said, “I was also laughing at the moment because they mispronounced my last name – which always happens – but they mispronounced it a way I don’t usually hear.”

Prom is the most anticipated night of the year for juniors and seniors. All of the worry about what dress to wear, what tie looks good, how to make a memorable promposal – all of it was worth it when the night of April 6, 2024, was danced away. For the two Prom Kings, Uriah Williams and Spencer Mallot, their worries were more so if it was worth running for the Prom royalty court as they stood on the stage in front of the crowd. Their concerns went down the drain when it was announced of their win.

“I was so ready to hear someone else be called that when I heard my name I was completely taken aback and I didn’t know how to react,” Williams said. “I was so in shock I think I forgot to smile at first, and then once it settled I was nothing but smiles.”

Williams is part of the Black Student Union and is a known icon at OHS for their always put-together outfits or more out-there pieces. In eighth grade, Williams decided red would be the look for prom but knew they wanted to create their own one-of-a-kind, show-stopping look.

“I wanted to add gems to give it a deeper sense of glamor, but I wasn’t sure how I would do that though,” Williams said in a description of designing the look. “The draping and tailoring were easy, but laying the gems individually was one of the most tedious tasks I’ve ever taken on. I layered my last sone the morning prom and that was more satisfying than finishing any assignment.”

Not just fashionable, Williams has proved personable as they have built many friendships throughout the four years of high school.

“I voted for Uriah as he’s a great, funny, well-spoken, and wonderful person to be around,” senior Lindsay Scheffler said. “I’ve never had one bad interaction with him as he is also one of my friends. I was ecstatic when he won as it is what he deserved.”

Alongside Williams was Mallot, a recognized Senior Top 10.

“I was super happy when they announced my name and I was both a little surprised and a little expecting it, because when they introduced each pair, I thought me and Uriah had the loudest cheers,” Mallot said. “So it was more of a, ‘I can’t believe it, this is awesome’ moment.”

Mallet is also involved in band, theater, the Brain Bowl, and French clubs.

“I’m not the stereotypical type of person who would usually get on the court,” Mallot said. “I wanted to just let my personality carry it, not any kind of campaign.”

Senior Larissa Calina voted for Mallot. The two are friends and sat at the same table for the dance, via the table reservation form. They danced together with their other friends, creating memories for themselves.

“He’s a fun and kind friend, plus he embodies OHS with his school spirit and studies,” Calina said. “I felt really proud of him, he definitely deserved it because you could see how happy he was.”

While the experiences of Prom Royalty do not cover the experiences of all, the event was deemed a success as seen with all of the smiles captured that night.

I really like this piece as it involves the winners and how they felt and describing their situation, bringing up their accomplishments in school also helped show why they won, however I would have liked to see at least a small part of the people who didn’t win.

What I really liked about this article is when they really get into detail about the Prom Kings themselves. When they describe what each of them are into or clubs they are in. My favorite line would be ”I wanted to add gems to give it a deeper sense of glamour”.

Winning prom king must hva ebeen such a cool experience. Prom is such a cool thing for the upperclassmen and it is really cool seeing who gets elected to the prom court for that year’s class. I really hope that the prom kings enjoyed their time at prom.

The story perfectly captures how fun and special prom night was partnered with the win of Uriah Williams and Spencer Mallot for royal court. The special detail that was put in William’s outfit added to the depth of his character and perfectly captivated his presence. The quote “I voted for Uriah as he’s a great, funny, well-spoken, and wonderful person to be around” emphasized the genuine connections formed within the high school community.

I really like this article. It was mostly well written. One thing I noticed was a few spelling errors. I personally know Spencer and one thing I noticed was that his last name was spelled wrong. It was only a minor error, they only forgot the ending “t”, but I feel like since he is Prom King and Top 10 his name is more known and it’s more noticeable that it’s spelled wrong. Other than that, it was really well written.

I really liked reading this article. I love how it was an added spotlight on the Prom Kings. It was really cool how they talked about Uriah’s fashion specificity for the night and Spencer’s reliance on his personality prior to the time of voting. I also think it’s cool that Spencer’s quote was included about not fitting the cookie cutter mold of prom royalty.

I really enjoyed this Article because it was well written. I liked how they interviewed friends of the prom court winners specifically and highlighted why they were happy he won. The photo they chose for the cover was also very attention-grabbing and made me really want to read the story.
