An amazing, underrated piece

Luke Thompson, Reporter

You’re on a two year expedition away from your family and an undocumented meteor belt appears out of nowhere – knocking your ship off course onto an unidentified planet. You’re the only survivor. Everyone else didn’t make it, besides a little girl that cannot speak your own language. She reminds you of your daughter, who tragically died while you were gone. She was sick and you weren’t there to comfort her. You find an escape pod 10 kilometers away from your position – the only way back home. You must get through prehistoric Earth to save yourself and a little girl named Koa (Ariana Greenblatt).

That is the predicament that Mills (Adam Driver) finds himself in the movie, 65.

65 may be one of the best dinosaur movies of all time. Nothing will beat the nostalgia of the original Jurassic Park, however I can say that 65 is up there with the Jurassic World franchise. This movie is perfect for the whole family, as no matter your age there are some moments that can get you screaming and jumping out of your chair. The story is original and creative. The meteor that eradicated the dinosaurs in our world is seen hitting at the end of the movie. The combat with futuristic grenades and energy-charged weapons used to take down dinosaurs, such as Raptors and the Tyrannosaurus Rex, in the dark night is just breathtaking and always has you hooked in.

The only problem I have with this film is the length. Nowadays, movies are starting to become longer and longer and sadly, 65 lands on only being 93 minutes. It’s short and it had so much room for a bigger story with a better conclusion to leave the viewer satisfied knowing what happened after they escaped Earth. Did they return safely? How? Did Mills return home with Koa and decided to take care of her? This movie’s story still keeps me thinking even after I finished watching. I do like stories where you can imagine how the rest of the story plays out however this one feels like it should have shown that.

The thing that doesn’t make any sense is how the movie only has 35% from Rotten Tomatoes and a 5.7/10 on IMDb. Also, on Google Reviews it only hit 3.1 stars with over 500 public ratings. It’s annoying to read the reviews and see people say that the movie was bland and the story was too hard to understand. In reality, the story isn’t difficult to understand at all. It can be unclear at some parts but as time goes on in the movie, those questions are mostly answered. It’s great the way everything ties up and how you have to remember events that happen because it may appear again with an amazing plot twist or occurrence. Driver played amazingly during this film, really setting the presence of being completely stranded on a planet overrun by dinosaurs. 65 had its fair share of jumpscares that caught the audience. Seeing a group of dinosaurs down below and then boom! A raptor jumps into frame with a terrifying scream, leaving you horrified. There are so many more horror factors in this movie, such as a nasty monster lurking in the depths of swampy water and just so many other great examples. This movie deserves a bigger place in the spotlight and a higher rating.
