Upperclassmen can access 2018-2019 schedule on Skyward

As the summer winds down and students get ready to head back to school, questions about next year’s class schedules come up.  Normally, these questions can be answered on a schedule-pick-up day, when students get a print-out of their schedules and request schedule changes.  This year, however, Oviedo High School has decided to try a different approach: sophomores, juniors, and seniors can access their schedule online on Thursday, Aug. 2.

“We are offering this method to get information to our students and streamline the process,” said assistant principal Matthew Ackley.

According to Ackley, student behavior in recent years informed the change. Many students had already been checking their schedules online instead of coming to campus.

“Our students and families are very familiar with the Skyward software,” Ackley said.  “We are not the first school to adopt this method.”

For schedule changes, students can still come to campus.

“This will not have any impact on students who need schedule changes before the school year starts,” Ackley said.  “Guidance counselors will still be available to meet with returning students (grade 10-12) on Aug. 2 from 9:45 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.”

Ackley hopes that the changes will help students and families.

“We are attempting to save our stakeholders time by not having to physically come to campus to get their information,” Ackley said.

Freshmen continue to have a separate, on-campus day.

“We will still have an orientation for incoming freshman and new students to OHS on Aug. 3,” Ackley said. “Ninth graders last name ‘A-M’ are from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., and ninth graders last name ‘N-Z’ and new students from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.”
