Oviedo High School has recently gotten a new extracurricular by the name of Kindness Club. This club is meant to bring positivity, support, respect and comfort for the students on campus who can attend events to do the same for the community. Their first club meeting was held Jan. 26 and their first service outside of school Feb. 21.

“I fully believe that spreading kindness through simple acts or community service is extremely important because you never know what someone is actively overcoming,” said sophomore Sophie Russo, the club’s event coordinator.

President Sydney Von Ancken (11th) and Vice President Kate Spickard (10th) are the girls who came up with the idea for this new club. Having a space like this on campus is important and significant for the students who are in need of one. Many different people with different views can join and come together as one when both intrigued by the mere idea of helping the community.

“I hope we can create almost a snowball effect of kindness and for people to feel a sense of acceptance and a purpose to go to school everyday,” sophomore Macy Smolik, social media coordinator said.

On Feb. 21, the club came together for their first service project at One Heart for Women and Children, where they helped organize and prepare bins to donate to the homeless. The event was filled with conversation and joy from all the girls.

“I am hoping that we can help as many people as possible as we continue to donate items and volunteer our hours,” Spickard said.

“Honestly, contributing to this club makes me feel like I am able to make a change,” Von Ancken said. “I am just hoping we gain so many new members and a lot of new people join so everyone can feel like they are making a change.”

Life comes with many struggles that sometimes can be exhausting to constantly overcome. These girls are a great example of good people who brighten everyone’s day. Being able to not only help others but help yourself as well can uplift spirits and bring more joy into lives.

“I think this club really can make a difference and I am so excited to see [the club’s growth],” says Russo.
