The Oviedo High School basketball team secured a strong victory against Lyman on Wednesday, Jan. 14, in a home game that finished the night with a successful 69-37 win.
Oviedo started the game out by dominating the greyhounds, scoring 22 points in the first quarter. The momentum continued in the second quarter, with the team adding 17 points. By halftime, Oviedo had built a comfortable lead and maintained control through the rest of the game. The Lions added 24 points in the third quarter and closed out the game with six more in the fourth.
“It was a good win and it builds momentum for our season, but we have to move forward and keep adding them,” senior shooting guard Daniel Stringer said referring to the importance of victories for the team.
Throughout the game, Oviedo relied on strong defense and teamwork to maintain control. The Lions played with high energy on both ends of the court, limiting Lyman and scoring opportunities. Their ability to stay focused during the game and play as a team unit was key to the outcome.
For junior and power forward Jordan Donahoo, motivation comes from more than just the scoreboard.
“My personal motivation is playing for my mom and my dad and my family that come out for every game and just playing for my teammates,” Donahoo said. “Everyone who counts on me to go out there and ball.”
Playing in Florida’s District 6A, the Oviedo Lions entered the matchup with a 14-4 overall record. Oviedo dominated statistically, averaging 63.1 points per game compared to Lyman’s 47.9. The Lions also led in rebounds and assists, showing strong control on both ends of the court. Ranked 36th in the state and 8th in the 6A division, Oviedo proved why they remain one of the district’s top teams on the court that night.
Junior Yu-Chen Pan emphasized the importance of consistency as the season continues.
“We want to keep improving, stay consistent and take it one game at a time,” Pan said
Looking ahead, the team remains focused on steady growth rather than results alone.
“My expectations for the next games are to keep pushing forward,” Donahoo also added. “Even if we lose, we put it behind us, don’t get too low with the lows and keep working to be better every day.”
Oviedo will face Lake Brantley High School tonight, Jan. 21, at 7:30 p.m. looking to continue their winning momentum.
