The Lions basketball team faced off against the Hagerty Huskies last Friday and came home with a win. The final score was 63-54, bringing the Lions’ total record to 12-3, with their only losses being against Windermere Prep, Lake Howell, and Olympia.

The Lions scored 13 points in the first quarter, ten points in the second quarter, 15 points in the third quarter, and 25 points in the fourth quarter to total 63 points. A close game, the Lions led in points in each quarter except the second, in which the Huskies scored 16 points, compared to the Lions’ ten.

This game was highly anticipated due to the rivalry between the two schools being just over 20 years old. The team has faced them many times throughout this period, and they’ve gone back and forth through wins and losses.

“…I feel good about the season, we had a rocky start, but it got better in time…” point guard Carter Oden (11th) said.

Each year, the team needs to adjust to new challenges against opponents, switching up their styles in order to make it to the bucket as many times as possible. This year has been incredibly successful, winning 12 games and going on an 8-game win streak.

“We just need to work on defense, I feel like we’re good at anything when we have [the] energy,” Oden said.

The Lions stand at a league record of 1-1, ranked 27th overall in Florida, and 2nd in District 6A. They’re led by point guard Oden with 16 points per game and 4.2 assists per game. He’s scored a total of 192, nearly 200 points in the season, and 27 points in the Hagerty game.

The Lions played the game on Hagerty’s home turf, a major disadvantage due to the large number of fans who go and show support at home games. Nonetheless, Oviedo persevered and took the win against Hagerty.

“We focused on what we could control, such as energy, effort, and execution,” senior guard Conner Collins said.

Collins is a key member of the team due to his floor spacing ability, with 40% of his threes making it into the basket. He’s scored 74 points during the season so far, a very impressive accomplishment.

Tonight at 7:00, the Lions travel to Central Florida Christian Academy to face the 12-4 CFCA Eagles, where they will hopefully pick up another win.
