The varsity girls soccer team is a strong cornerstone of the athletics program at Oviedo High School. They have been a consistently strong force throughout the years, and this season is no different. They’re holding a current record of 9-1-1, with one tie against Lake Brantley High School and one loss to Lake Mary High School. They have won by eight points, their greatest margin, in three games: against Freedom High School, against Trinity Preparatory School and against Winter Springs High School, all with a final score of 8-0.

With 11 players on the field, the offense and defense must be coordinated in order to seamlessly move around the field. One player on the team is Delaney Waller, one of the defensive players, who have some of the most important jobs: preventing the ball from reaching their goalie.
“The team’s strong points are getting [the] ball up to the goal and working together to pass around the other team,” said Waller, a junior.
With such a good record, it’s no surprise that the team works well together, executing plays in order to get around the opponent’s defense and reach the goal. This is especially important when faced with difficult teams, like their games against Lake Brantley and their loss to Lake Mary; however, it aids them in their victories against other schools, such as Trinity Prep. They scored eight goals in that game, requiring maximum precision in passes and shots in order to reach such a milestone.
The team is aided on their field by the synergy they feel with each other.
“Team chemistry [really improves] ability to pass accurately,” said head coach Scott Waisanen.
With an average of about 4.4 goals per game, the team is in the midst of one of their strongest seasons. The Lions have another four games until it comes time for championships, and they show no signs of slowing down.
