The girls varsity basketball team started off this season with some hiccups. Their first game was a loss of 61-41 against Deltona High School, and though they had a comeback with a 65-15 win against Trinity Preparatory School just two days later, the following three games were losses with the scores of 79-31 at Lake Howell High School, 50-38 against Hagerty High School, and 62-48 against Flagler Palm Coast High School. However, the girls are coming back stronger with a win at Palm Bay, 60-22, and a win at Lake Brantley, 55-43.
“We’re getting better every game. I think that it’s just a work in progress,” said varsity coach Jacob Sloan.
One of Sloan’s goals for the team this season is to win 15 games, something the team hasn’t achieved in a few years. The team is striving to meet this goal, but Sloan has another overarching goal for the year.
“A goal in total is to enjoy playing basketball, knowing we’re on a team that likes to have fun, but also does what we need to do on the court,” Sloan said.
Players are not discouraged by the early losses.
“We got off to a bit of a rough start but I think we are starting to connect better on and off the court,” said shoot guard and captain Hailey Bundy.
This year, Bundy is a senior, and it is her last time playing high school basketball.
“I’m just looking forward to winning games. It’s my senior year, so I just leave everything out on the line this year,” Bundy said.
Leave it out on the line, she has. Bundy scored six points against Flagler, three points against Palm Bay, and got two steals from Hagerty.
This season there are new players and coaches that the team has to get used to. Some player’s positions have been changed, including sophomore forward Hanna Adamczyk.
“I come from being a guard, so now, when I’m post, I have to adapt,” Adamczyk said. She scored 14 points against Hagerty and ten points against Deltona.
With the team now being seven games into the season, though, they have begun to adjust to their situation.
“We’re now picking it up and starting to understand how we play and how everything comes together,” said junior power forward Kaitlyn Falk.
Falk’s position keeps her close to the net, resulting in a high number of points each game. She scored 13 against Lake Brantley, 14 against Flagler, and 12 against Palm Bay.
Overall, the team has been steadily improving, and players have good mindsets for the remainder of the season with goals to work towards. At 6 p.m. today, the team will play at the 6-5 Orlando Christian Prep, and they have their sights set high.
