Yearbook staff strives to improve at Elite Weekend event

Though students will not see The Oviedian yearbook until May, the yearbook staff dedicates hours–even weekends–to creating the memorabilia. From Sept. 16-18, several yearbook staff members attended Elite Weekend to get guidance on this year’s design.

“We presented our theme package, which is the cover and the end sheets, to highly known judges or advisors that have won Pacemakers or Crowns, which are almighty in yearbook,” said junior Megan Handler. “We wanted their feedback on what they thought about our theme package.”

At this event, the yearbook staff was able to receive constructive criticism on their ideas for the yearbook.

”One thing that they really told us is that some of the things that we were incorporating into our ideas were more of a decoration rather than a way to design the pages,” Handler said.

That constructive criticism allowed the staff to recognize what aspects of the yearbook needed changes.

“The feedback from the judges helped us to develop our theme and to make the yearbook better and stronger,” said junior Danny Sanchez.

Many aspects of the yearbook were analyzed at the Elite Weekend.

“We got critiqued on our cover, and we are working on changing that right now because of everything that they said,” said junior Emma Gill.

One of the main yearbook editors, senior Shane Taylor, acknowledged the need to update the design with new ideas, to make it more appealing to the masses.

“It was really good for me to go because we hadn’t really decided on the spread that would go with the theme of our yearbook,” Handler said. “It gave me a good idea what they were thinking. It helped us become more official and set with our spread and layouts.”
