With an 8-0 win against Freedom High School on January 16th the Girls JV soccer season has drawn to a close. In a dominant season, the Lions finished with a 13-1-1 record while compiling an amazing goal differential of 83-2.
In the dominant season, when the team averaged over five and a half goals per game, the name of the game was improvement. The JV team provides an opportunity for players to develop their soccer skills. It can be used as a stepping stone to the varsity team or as a place for people to play the game they love.
As a developmental team, the JV season is full of goals, on and off the pitch, that players and coaches work to fulfill in their pursuit of improvement.
“[I wanted] to let in the least amount of goals as possible,“ Rachel Bram
mer, junior, said, one of the team’s captains and its starting goalkeeper.
Brammer’s goal was achieved as the team only allowed two goals over the course of the whole season. The team’s success was spurred along by the sense of family that the team possesses. This togetherness helped players feel motivated to practice and play.
“[My favorite memory] was the practices after the break when we got to see everybody again,” Brammer said.
The team spends lots of time together on and off the field which helps birth friendships between the coaches and players. These friendships allow players to play as a team which is a huge part of soccer, as passing and ball movement help score goals and limit goals allowed.
“[My teammates] have helped me in every way really, just becoming friends on and off the pitch,” junior center back Elizabeth Genao said.
The relationships made on the team motivate players to show up, try their best, and return next season.
“I just like to play with my friends,” freshman Zoe Ivaszuk said.
The mix of ages on the team help create a new experience for incomers that they eventually transfer on to younger players when they are upperclassmen.
“[My favorite season] was definitely freshman year. Everything was new and it was great to play for the first time,” said Genao.
Now the blend of personalities and people on the team can look forward to next year with anticipation. With the success of the team this season OHS girls’ soccer seems to be in as good a place as ever coming off the completion of the season.
