Venom: The Last Dance is the end of a journey six years in the making. The relationship between the dark, slimy symbiote, and Tom Hardy’s character of his attached human “component” has reached its conclusion. To understand how we got here, let’s go back a bit.
To introduce the new Venom, his story in the Sony universe began in the first of its series released in 2018. In the movie, a bioengineering corporation called Life Foundation was exploring habitable worlds, when they discovered a comet covered in a symbiotic life form. There were four samples of them, and one escaped, causing a ship to crash in Malaysia. The Corporation found the three other samples, bringing them to San Francisco. A CEO named Carlton Drake runs trails on these symbiotes and figures out that they need a host to be able to survive. A journalist named Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) studied this and later made the encounter with Venom by fusing with him through a girl he was trying to save.
Eddie was faced with challenges after having the help of Venom to fight off those trying to take him back. Another symbiote named Riot takes over many people making his way to Drake, tricking him to bring others to Earth. Venom and Eddie fight off Riot and Drake, saving Earth. I think this part of the movie was a really impressive part, because of the fight scene and how they designed Riot.
The film introduced us to the characters that would keep us hooked through the years, and into the following entries. The next of which was released in 2021.
Released four years after the original, Venom: Let There Be Carnage introduces us to a killer named Cletus Kasady (Woody Harrelson), who was taken over by a symbiote named Carnage. He kills the guards and saves the prisoners. Freeing Kasady, and agreeing to help him save his love interest, a woman by the name of Frances from the Ravencroft Institute, an insane asylum. That is, only if they eliminate Venom and Eddie. After Eddie had gotten arrested, he contacted Anne as his lawyer, saying Venom had separated from him and he is moving body to body in San Francisco. Later, Eddie and Venom come back together and go fight Carnage. whose venom had tricked Frances into separating Carnage from Cletus’s body, who were both devoured by Venom.
In Venom: The Last Dance, Venom and Eddie were at a bar in Mexico, still on the run from the Carnage fight, trying to clear their name from people thinking they killed Patrick Mulligan. Patrick was a former detective in charge of the case with Cletus Kasady. Mulligan is later found alive and had fused with another symbiote in a bunker under Area 51, where other symbiotes are found that landed on Earth. A creature named Xenophage was tracking Venom and Eddie down to free their higher up named Knull from this prison. Later in a big fight between all of the symbiotes and more Xenophages, Venom was able to merge with the Xenophages, leading them into acid tanks, saying his last goodbye to Eddie.
Despite the low score appearing on Rotten Tomatoes, some people truly enjoyed it. But this is clearly subjective, and you may form your own conclusions!
