The Oviedo boy’s cross country team has officially finished out their season. They started their post-season with the team getting second in the district meet, moving on to Regionals where they prepared to compete at the highest level.
“We lowered our mileage a little bit, increasing our intensity, and trying to focus on our little things like our nutrition and our sleep,” sophomore Levi Mollica said.
For regionals, the top 15 teams compete against each other so they can have a spot to move on to the State Meet. To qualify you must be in the top 8 teams in the region. This year, the Lions placed 4th in the region moving on to states.
“Our goal was to be top 10 in the state this year so we expected to make it and were excited to see how we were gonna perform on the day,” Mollica said.
The Oviedo boys cross country team qualified for the State meet, placing third in the region to compete against the top teams in the state. The Lions ended up placing fifth in the state as a team.
“I was proud of my boys, I think the team as a whole was a lot more motivated this year and did what they had to do for us to place,” junior Colin Aysun said.
The Oviedo boy’s cross country team also has one individual runner, Colin Aysun who placed 9th in the state.
”I was seated in the 20-30th range and just being able to get 9th felt good,” Aysun said.
Aysun took a big jump from his performance last year and hopes to continue to improve going into his senior year.
“I don’t think I was in the top 100 last year, and going into this year I did some strength training in the summer. I think just trusting the process and being more consistent is what helped me get 9th this year,” Aysun said.
The boy’s cross country team had finished their season completing their goals of making it in the top 10 in the state, and now hope to accomplish their new goals for next year.
With this next season, the team hopes to continue to improve. Only losing 1 runner out of their top 7, and want to keep a strong team.
