Herding the Rams
Oviedo girls’ varsity volleyball overcomes persistent Lake Mary
WEB EXCLUSIVE
Tuesday night, the varsity volleyball girls defeated Lake Mary in straight sets, 25-17, 25-15, 25-22. What sounds like a display of utter domination was actually a hard fought struggle, which tested the Lady Lions through the very last point.
“The biggest challenge we faced was being able to stay offensive with a large block,” said sophomore Savannah Vach. “As a team we did really well handling this challenge.”
A 16-19 deficit in the last set could not keep the Lions from a victory. The comeback was highlighted by a clutch kill from sophomore Rileigh Powers.
“When I was going up for my hit, it was tied at 22,” Powers said. “I knew I had to put it away because it was a very important part of the game.”
Powers’ kill, along with another of her own and one from Vach, helped the Lady Lions grab the lead. When freshman Audrey Douglas made a key block a few points later, the set and match were sealed.
While the first set went back and forth between Oviedo and Lake Mary, the Lady Lions took the second set with ease. Lake Mary’s early lead in the third set was not enough to keep the determined Lions from a win.
“The win is obviously a very big deal because Oviedo hasn’t beaten Lake Mary in a long time,” Vach said. “I’m always very excited when the team succeeds, and now we just have to focus on our upcoming games to continue with our success.”
