This year’s Homecoming dance and festivities have had a few bumps in the road due to recent weather events, but Oviedo High School’s Homecoming was still an experience Oviedo’s students were grateful for.
Homecoming is an important event for OHS and other schools alike. There is tons of work put into making OHS’s Homecoming dance stand out against the rest and making it an incredible night for all. Oviedo’s Student Government Association (SGA) is the group behind Homecoming and all of the work put into planning the special night and the celebrations that come with it.
Ms. Delong is the teacher sponsor for SGA; she is also a science teacher at Oviedo High School. She describes Homecoming preparation as a long process, starting six months before the day of the dance “It takes a long time to go through all of our ideas, narrow it down to the best ideas, buy all of the materials using the Purchase Order system from our different vendors (Lowe’s, Amazon, Michael’s, Walmart, etc) and then get the materials,” Delong said. “There is glue, paint, and glitter everywhere!”
Not just the decorations, but a DJ, food, theme, and more are all things that need to be taken into account when planning for the dance. This year’s theme created by the students of SGA for the dance proved itself to be controversial, with mixed reactions.
The decision is made based on a vote against other possible themes, and this year’s chosen theme was all about the galaxy.
Delong added that this year’s theme was a challenge compared to previous themes. “It has been a little bit more challenging to decide how we to decorate the commons and the courtyards to get the galaxy theme across in a big way,” she said, showcasing the complications coming with planning this school-wide event.
Zachary Griffin is a junior at Oviedo and a member of the SGA, and he agrees that this year’s theme has been challenging, not just because of the theme. “This year’s theme is harder than last year because homecoming is earlier,” He said. This year, homecoming took place in September, instead of the typical October, adding to the stress of the big day.
“The prep for the dance is complicated, it takes a team to get it done,” Griffin said, emphasizing the important role that teamwork and community play in this process.
Taylor White is also familiar with this concept of unity. She also acknowledges that Homecoming prep is hard work. “It looks like working every day either during your lunch or during your SGA period to make the dance look good and feel special,” she said when asked to describe the pre-Homecoming procedures.
“We’ve really been working hard since the first day of school,” White said. Showing the dedication of the student members of SGA, and their commitment to making Homecoming great.
The work of SGA made last Saturday a night to remember and will continue to make future dances and spirit weeks full of fun. School spirit remains high even beyond the weeks of Homecoming, thanks to the students of the SGA and the entire student body and faculty as a whole.
