This week the Oviedo Lions beat the Lake Brantley Patriots 55-0, marking the second shutout of the season, doubling the Lions total from a season prior.
Head Coach and play caller Greg Odierno decided to put the trust of the offense back in senior Quarterback Jerome Curry’s hands and was rewarded with an explosive 55-point performance. Curry was sharp on the night, only throwing two incompletions while managing 178 yards through the air to go along with three touchdowns. Although Curry did not see the field much in Oviedo’s first win over Sickles due to a rib injury, he has not allowed this minor setback to deter him.
“It was definitely a toll mentally knowing my ribs were vulnerable, but Coach made a game plan to protect me and make sure I’m 100% for Lyman,” Curry said.
Curry was helped by an array of offensive weapons including a big game from Oviedo Legacy and sophomore Jordan Donahoo.
Donahoo, younger brother of Oviedo legend Alex Saunders, led the Lions in receiving Friday night with two long catches going for 88 yards and a touchdown. Donahoo is one of only two Sophomores starting weekly for the Lions and will see his target share grow after his breakout performance against the Patriots.
“It’s been a big jump, at this age it’s all about growing up fast and utilizing your teammates along the way,” Donahoo said.
The Lions were not only efficient in the air, but managed 191 yards on the ground as well, 90 of which coming off the legs of speedster Chance Nixon who averaged 10 yards per carry while also notching his 4th touchdown of the season.
Nixon, who had an uncharacteristically quiet performance in week 2, bounced back in a big way against the Patriots thanks to a good week of practice leading up to the Lion’s week three matchup. Nixon believes the hard work he’s put in throughout his career has led to this breakout season.
“I’ve gotten a lot bigger and a lot faster which helps me hit holes harder and break a lot more tackles than before” Nixon said.
Next week the Lions face off against the struggling Lyman Greyhounds who after a dominant victory against Lake Brantley in week one, have suffered two straight losses. Last season the Lions got the better of the Greyhounds 49-21, in a game that would end up deciding the district champions. Even with a little less at stake this week, the Lions still expect to come out of the bout victorious.
