Last week, Oviedo’s girl’s varsity volleyball team went up against Lake Brantley high school. Both teams went into this game with an undefeated season, both holding a 3-0 record.
The Oviedo girl’s volleyball team was going into the game with high hopes of getting their record to 4-0 for the beginning of their 2024 season. They desired to keep the undefeated streak going, and a lot of players had the feeling that they couldn’t be stopped.
“We all were pretty confident going into the game and felt good about showing who we were,” Oviedo senior Addison Imbs said.
However, the confidence they had going into the game was coupled with the knowledge that this game would not be an easy win for them. Facing an undefeated team, the stakes were high.
“Brantley is a tough opponent with a strong offense, we had to change our game speed to match theirs,” senior Olivia Klimis said.
The Lions fell short this game losing 1-3 as the final score. What was supposed to be an ‘intense game’ didn’t fall short for Oviedo spectators and volleyball lovers. But, at this game, Oviedo couldn’t match Lake Brantley.
“We had to face their really big blocker and heavy swings along with their really good passing,” Imbs said.
This was not the outcome that Oviedo expected, but they are not allowing this game to define their season.
“We were pretty upset about the outcome, but we are taking it as a learning lesson to start stronger from the beginning,” Imbs said.
The Oviedo girl’s volleyball team has big goals, and they hope to accomplish them this year despite this setback.
“We hope to win the district, conference, and regional championships this year,” said Klimis.
The girl’s team also has some of their own goals for the season that they hope to reach to bring success to the team.
“My goals this year are to have 1000 assists and to always lead my team,” Klimis said.
With the way the Lake Brantley game went, Oviedo hopes to improve their game plan for the next game they have against Lake Mary on September 4th. This game is the Duchenne game which will be taking place at Oviedo, recognizing the World Duchenne Awareness Day.
“We hope to focus on ourselves and come out stronger. We want to show what we are made of,” Imbs said.
The planned adjustments will allow this team to come back from the loss, and to showcase their competitiveness, hard work, focus, and ability. These players don’t plan to let past challenges get in their way, Oviedo’s Girls volleyball is a competitive team.
“Although we didn’t get the outcome we wanted, it is nice that it is still early on in the season and we can learn about us as a team and how we can improve together through matches like that,” Coach Darty said.
