Girls’ bowling team’s cheers reflect their success

“Set it down, fire it up!” At a girls’ bowling match, this is the cheer after one of the girls rolls a strike.
During matches, the team has cheers for each person that represent their personalities. They have a cheer to pick up a split, when having picked up a spare and for when they strike.
“Coming together and cheering helps all of us to stay [dominant],” said sophomore Shauna Rodgers.
The team completed its fourth consecutive undefeated regular season and won states on Nov. 2. The team attributes this to their overall talent and the strength of their opponents.
“We don’t have hard competition in our district,” Rodgers said. “We try to challenge ourselves mentally by changing things up, by trying a different ball or a different line.”
Their coach, Pat Costello, has also played a key role in the team’s success.
“I try to understand what my coach is trying to tell me, because she always has a reason behind it,” said junior Priscilla Chun said. “If I don’t understand, I make sure to ask her.”
Chun explained how the motivation of the underclassmen keeps the upperclassmen on top of their game. Cheers made for the underclassmen exemplify the strong bonds between teammates.
“I get really excited when one of the freshmen or underclassmen picks up a really nice spare,” Chun said. “The upcoming freshmen and new players are very enthusiastic and really want to play.”
