The girls’ golf team is one of the most prestigious teams at Oviedo High School, and boast many different achievements in the years they’ve been around.
This year, while off to a rocky start, has begun to see an upwards curve. One of the most notable performances of this year was their 5th place in the Hagerty Invitational. A test to see where they stood at the beginning of the year helped them to be prepared for what they needed to work on.
“I like spending time with my friends on the course,” said senior Kendall Owen.
Owen is a third year golf player, and was new to the sport when she joined. Despite this, she was able to find her place on the team and has made many friends in her golf career.
While golf is seen by many as a single person sport, being in a team is arguably the most important part of it. Without a team, you can’t compete in competitions.
“I just like the team atmosphere, being able to play with… people, with my team….” said sophomore Sara Marl.
One of the most important segments of any sport is the bond you form with teammates, and there is no shortage of that on the golf team.
For the team, weather is one of the biggest issues with scheduling reliable games. The turf has to be kept in near-dry conditions, and heavy rains can impact games or cancel them completely.
“A lot of times, one of our struggles is that all our matches get rained out, and that hasn’t been an issue this year,” said Owen.
However, an issue has risen; it’s no secret that becoming committed to a sport or team is a big investment, and it can be difficult to remain committed.
“It takes four experienced players to be competitive, and we don’t quite have that this year,” said Coach McKernan. “To be good at golf, a player has to be committed to playing year-round.”
Although this means by no stretch that the team isn’t good. This past Tuesday, they placed seventh overall in the Seminole Athletics Conference, a very prestigious accomplishment with the large number of teams in the area.
Next, they match up in the district four tournament from Oct. 27 to Oct. 29, before regionals and states.
