Following another game in the varsity football season, the Oviedo Lions remain in a good position while heading towards the end of the varsity season. Before the game against Lake Howell High School, the Lions stood at a 4-2 record, with their two losses being against Bishop Moore Catholic High School and Lake Brantley High School. They’d been on a three-game win streak, and with the result of Friday night’s game, that streak had only continued.
The game had undoubtedly been an exciting one, with the Lions coming out on top with a score of 43 to the Silverhawks 20. The Lions dominated in the fourth and final quarter, scoring 21 points.
Some of the highest statistics put up in the game included Sebastian Galeano with 207 passing yards, Dashon Febres with 123 receiving yards, and Johnnie Cobbs with 110 rushing yards.
“We don’t lose to Lake Howell. We haven’t lost to them since 2004,” Cobbs said. “we owe it to everyone who came before us to beat Lake Howell. We don’t play for ourselves we play for the team and rep Oviedo as one.”
This determination could be seen especially in the strong plays during the fourth quarter. The Lion’s looked like they suddenly ‘clicked’ as they scored 3 drives in a row, putting point after point on the board. The lions also struggled to play as one at the start of their season, causing two crucial losses.
“We saw our rough start and saw how impactful the start could be to our season if we didn’t turn it around quickly,” said sophomore Charlie Warren.
Improve they did. After the completion of the latest game, the Lions now stand at a record of 5-2, with their only losses being against Bishop Moore and Lake Brantley.
Despite the season and players stats, the Lions came out a little flat on Friday, scoring half of their points in the last six minutes of the game. This tough start had fans on the edge of their seats, considering Oviedo’s win streak against the Silver Hawks
“No one was expecting it to be easy, we had a different plan in anticipation of rain that didn’t happen, which threw us off, but once we got rolling we were rolling. But I know this week and next week we can’t let that happen.” Cobbs said.
Of the 43 total points scored by Oviedo, seven points were scored in both quarter one and quarter three, eight points were scored in quarter two, and an astounding 21 points in quarter four.
Of the grand total of six touchdowns, two were scored by senior Brock Joyce, one was scored by junior Carmari Solomon, two were scored by senior Johnnie Cobbs, and the final touchdown was scored by senior Steven Malone. Sophomore Patrick O’Brien also had a kicking five points.
“My favorite part this season has been watching the guys ahead of me shine and inspire myself to learn new things and get better… [Dashon] along with the older receivers have been great examples to the young receivers including me.” Warren said.
As a newcomer to the varsity team, Warren is very excited to be a part of the bond that comes with the Oviedo football team, and can’t wait for the next game, in which the Oviedo Lions travel away from home to face the University High School Titans.
