The hit anime, “Demon Slayer,” released a new movie in continuation of the series not too long ago, and it shortly became the biggest anime movie to ever release. The movie broke several records and grossed almost $500 million worldwide.
The “Demon Slayer” anime is an extremely popular anime made originally as a book or manga, and the story begins with a young boy named Tanjiro whose family gets killed by demons while his sister is turned into one. He then meets a Demon Slayer by the name of Giyuu, and Tanjiro later joins the Slayer corp. Tanjiro meets a boy who was raised by boars, Inosuke, as well as the Flame Pillar Rengoku, and another boy Zenitsu who reveals his true power when he sleeps. They board the infinity train, starting the Mugen Train arc. Their mission is to defeat a demon who has been terrorizing it, but they ultimately fail and it ends with the death of the Flame Pillar Rengoku, leaving a sad moment in the series that boosted the popularity drastically. With that being the end of season one, Tanjiro along with Inosuke and Zenitsu join the Sound Hashira Tengen Uzui on a mission to investigate a demon in the Yoshiwara red-light district. With season 3 starting, Tanjiro was searching for a new sword after his broke in the red-light district. While he is doing this with two other Hashiras, Mitsuri and Muichiro, they find themselves under attack from two upper-rank demons Gyokko and Hantengu. The final season leads into the Infinity Castle arc and focuses on the Demon Slayers preparing for a battle with the Demon Muzan, the main villain of the series. “Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle” part one starts off with them trapping and attacking Muzan, but ultimately failing when they get sent into the Infinity Castle, Muzan’s dimensional stronghold and with that they get separated and attacked by multiple powerful demons.
With the recap aside, the movie was a great combination of beautifully crafted scenes and animation with plenty of amazing fight scenes and emotional moments. Some people were disappointed with the pacing of the film, as it shows a long backstory of the demon Akaza, who was a thief, stealing for his father’s medicine, who was taken in by a martial arts master and met his future fiancée, to the sad ending of them dying by poison and Akaza becoming a demon. This scene sparked many emotions in people, and when Akaza was fighting in the present time, he was stopped by the ghost of his fiancée. That resulted in the movie ending with Tanjiro and Giyuu winning, but completely exhausted. Some other reviews stated it to be “episodes stitched together” and “moments of tonal shift and rest.” The film has been a great topic for discussion on whether it would have worked better as a season or just as a movie. The ratings were mixed with a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes and a whopping 100% audience score, but due to pacing issues, IGN gave it a 6/10 and IMDb gave it an 8.6/10. But the money shows a lot, with the movie shattering records all across the board. The film grossed $555 million by September 21st, becoming the largest anime film to ever be released as well as the largest Japanese film of all time globally, breaking the record from “Pokemon: The First Movie” with their $70 million box office opener.
Overall, the film is highly rated and starts the trilogy of movies for the “Infinity Castle” series. Personally, I think it was a great movie and I highly recommend it for fans of Demon Slayer and people who are interested in the film.
