Last night, the remaining Republican candidates participated in the tenth GOP debate of this election cycle. Last night’s “debate” quickly turned into an all-out brawl, resembling a WWE-esque cage match in a fight for the nomination. As soon as the debate began, the attacks ensued, as most of the night was a three way brawl between frontrunners Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, and Marco Rubio.

CNN moderator Wolf Blitzer had no control over the debate, as the candidates essentially ran the debate themselves – which turned into an all out scream-fest. Personally, I believe the rhetoric and screaming from the candidates last night was far below the respect and dignity with which a contest to become the next President should be conducted.

Attacks aside, I believe Marco Rubio won last night’s debate. He was the first candidate so far of this race to effectively combat Donald Trump, in my view. Hitting Trump on  a wide variety of issues, along with tossing witty zingers, led to a phenomenal performance from Rubio. Rubio’s attacks on Trump revealed just how thin-skinned Trump is, as his face turned beet red and he could barely conjure up his retorts without looking unhinged. Rubio was able to effectively attack Trump on legitimate issues without looking like a fool, which was a rarity in last night’s debate. Trump’s demeanor is what I feel is a big issue for him if he is the Republican nominee, as I do not believe it would bode well for him contrasted with mild-mannered, Presidential-like Hillary Clinton.

As for the other competitors, Ted Cruz piled the insults onto Trump as well, and I believe he had a so-so night in his home state of Texas. John Kasich seemed, at times, to be the only adult on the stage, offering practical solutions and mild-mannered responses when questioned, all without stooping to the insults around him. Lastly, as for Ben Carson: the man is a brilliant neurosurgeon, but seems to struggle in debate environments.

The social media response last night was a mix of humor and disgust, as most people online did not enjoy the way the candidates conducted themselves. However, they found humor in much of what Ben Carson said.

As we move on from last night’s contest, the race is becoming more and more clear. Ben Carson has no shot at the nomination, and Kasich’s chances are slim as well. Cruz and Rubio are obviously feeling the heat to try to dethrone “The Donald,” and the effectiveness of attempting to do such remains to be seen, as either the voters will applaud Rubio’s attacks or disdain the debate in its entirety. As for Trump, nothing seems to stick to him, and despite a rocky debate performance he will most likely continue to dominate the field.

Ultimately, last night’s debate was telling of the state of the Republican Party – unfortunately, a compete mess.
